"24:Redemption", two-hours long TV movie that premiered last night, is a "bridge" connecting the last season that ended 18 months ago and the new one which we, the fans of the show have been waiting impatiently and which is scheduled to open in January 2009. The film takes place in real time format, just like all episodes do. After watching it, I am excited about upcoming season and I hope that 24 - Season 7 will be more like season 1 than season 6. Judging by the movie, "24: Redemption", there are many reasons for hope. The film is thrilling, gripping, it uses every one of its minutes effectively, and it is much more plausible with its plot and Jack's relations and intentions. It was a good idea to take Jack out of LA and place him in one of hot places on the planet, Sangala, the fictional country in Africa, with very real problems that look too familiar. Redemption's whole purpose is to set you up for season 7 and it does that soooooooo perfectly. When first watching it, I had to assume that this could possibly be completely lame and just be a stupid excuse for there to be a 24 movie. But NOT TRUE SIR! Redemption gives so much reason for Jack coming back into play. Even the most obsessed fan of 24 (such as myself) has to ask at some point, "how long can this go on and how many times can one man be pulled back into these messes and come out on top every time???" Well, seriously... Redemption continues to make sense of everything and absolutely won't let you down. Plus, if you skip this movie and go straight to season 7, you'll be a little in the dark on a few things. I don't have to tell you that it's a "must have" for any fan of 24 because any fan already knows that as long as its part of the series, it is a "must have."

This is definitely what the 24 series needed! So what would 24 be like if Jack Bauer wasn't at CTU? What would it be like if it wasn't set in Los Angeles, California? Awesome is the answer to these questions. Season 6 had me wavering as a 24 fan. Granted I still think the character is great, but Season 6 was just plagued with bad writing! Jack's dad was the cause behind the problems way too many times for it to be shocking by the end and it lost that edge of your seat action feel without the shocking conclusions.

Anyway "Redemption" has Jack on the run, which is no secret to those who saw the end of last season. Apparently he's already fled to a bunch of different places and we finally catch up with Jack in Africa. It does sort of feel like a cliché rip off of the "Blood Diamond" story in some respects, but honestly they managed to keep me entertained well enough. As the action begins in New York City, Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), now a grandfather, has retired from his gig at the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) and plans to move to California to be with his family. When he learns of a plot to assassinate President Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor) of the mythical Islamic Republic of Kamistan--who's set to join the U.S. president, Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones), and the Russian leader at the United Nations, where they will sign a historic agreement that will end Kamistan's nuclear program and bring lasting peace to the Middle East--Jack leaps right back into the fray. Needless to say, the plot thickens faster than the pools of congealed blood he inevitably leaves in his deadly wake. Who's behind the assassination scheme? Is it Hassan's power-hungry brother, who has no desire to give up his country's nukes, or is he in cahoots with bigger, more sinister forces? The makers of 24 have already shown that they're willing to go way over the top to preserve the central conceit (an entire season takes place in a single day, with each episode consuming one hour of that day), and the eighth season is no different. Plot twists that defy all credibility are not uncommon; there's no time to track down rumors or verify information, so the action tends to proceed in almost cartoon-like fashion. Many characters make cardboard look sturdy, especially the bad guys (a bunch of arrogant fools, craven traitors, and murderous louses). But that's what has made the show so addictive; it simply hurtles along, leaving no time to ask questions. And while the adventures of Jack Bauer, the ultimate one-man army, appear to be over for good, this season makes us wish that a day were just a bit longer then 24 hours. I came into this season expecting it to be the last. Fox had long maligned the fact that '24' was very expensive to make. They also cited lagging ratings (mostly due to the lackluster season 6 leaving a bad taste in viewers mouths and the WGA strike making the show almost irrelevant.) as a reason to ax the show. And besides, the concept was becoming a bit outdated. Even the tenor of season 8, with the world standing on the brink of an historic peace agreement, signified that 24 was coming full circle. The idea that peace could exist in a world of espionage and paranoia such as the one 24 dwelled in, was a big step toward a brave new world. The kind of thing you see when a show wants to go out with a bang. I was ready for it to end and am sad to see it go. The Machiavellian exploits of Jack Bauer have been must see television from Day One (November 6,2001) in my household. On Tuesdays at 9pm (Seasons 1-3) and Mondays at 9pm (Seasons 4-8), no one was allowed to bother me. I loved this... Read more

I may be in the few when I say this, but I don't think this show ever qualified as "past its prime." It seems like a lot of the reviews coming out from papers, magazines, even fans revolved around the fact that the show ended on a good note, HOWEVER --note the asterisk-- (*it's not what it once was). Yes, there were recurring themes. Yes, we've gone through the whole nuclear weapons story before. Yes, some things were more predictable than they used to be. But I, for one, loved watching Jack Bauer and Chloe O'Brian evolve. I loved watching Charles Logan try and wiggle his way back into the good graces of Americans. I loved watching where the shattered life of Tony Almeida led him in Season 7. I think, reasonably so, a lot of people considered the shark jumped after Season 6. I did, too. But I continued watching, and I thought Seasons 7 and 8 were two of the strongest the 24 crew put together.

A quick note: the following review contains only minor spoilers concerning returning characters and storylines and does not disclose any major revelations.

Previously on 24: For 7 seasons the thriller genre was redefined and the bar for drama and suspense was raised to a new high, and not just for television. The brilliant, subversive and fearless writing staff, the deep cast of memorable characters, the always atmospheric scores of Sean Callery, and the inventive real-time format made for the greatest thrill ride in television history. 24 was not always flawless, in fact, there were moments that threatened to destroy its legacy (see season 6 for an example), but for the most part, 24 ranged from great to masterful (see season 5). So naturally, us fans, who already had ridiculously high standards for our beloved series expected pure, unrelenting excellence from its 8th and final season...

I have watched every season of 24 the same way: wait for it to come out on DVD, start it on Friday night, and finish all 24 episodes by Sunday night. I end up exhausted, sore, and somewhat addled, having missed -- like Jack -- a few critical phone calls, several meals, and almost all emotional connection with my fellow human beings . . . but with at least some sense of how poor Jack must feel when he punches out at the end of a workday only a superhero can handle. It's really the only way to do it.

Season 7 was a rollicking good time, restarting the adrenaline drip that ran somewhat dry last season. I'm a big fan of Cherry Jones and am still grousing about how she lost the movie role in "Doubt" that she so sublimely played on stage. With the shadow of Mother Aloysius hanging over things, I spent the first few hours wondering whether Ms. Jones was miscast as Madame President. Where was the edge, the certainty, the petulance? But after a couple of terrorist attacks... Read more

Just got finished watching this on TV and yes I am one of those "stupid people" who will go out and buy this tomorrow. And I will watch it again as soon as I do because that's just how great this show really is. I cant understand why people who are supposed to be such big fans of the show are actually angry they are releasing the dvd early. Wouldn't that be what you want?

But anyway...on to the show....

24 Season 7 will go down as one of the premiere seasons in the shows history. Maybe, from start to finish, the best since Season 1. After a lackluster Season 6, I think it was safe to say that the writers and producers of the show had a clear opportunity to start over and start fresh. And they did. What we got was a smart, tight, and extraordinarily acted season with the same raging action and plot twists but still with a different feel to it. By relocating out of L.A and into D.C. we got the chance to see Jack Bauer out of his element for the first time... Read more

I've noticed all of the reviews mainly focus on the season itself and not the essentials of the whether the blu-ray transfer of this season was good or not. So I've decided to add my two cents in. And remember everyone we are all entitled to our opinions so feel free to disagree. O.K. First of all I think season 7 was pretty good. I would give it 4 stars overall. It was better than the mess of season 6 and came close to the greatness of season 5. Of course nothing has come close yet to season 2 in my opinion. That was the standard that will be used to measure all action series for years to come. Anyway, yes there were some uneven moments and plot holes this season at times but when you look at the big picture after watching the entire show the writers explained it well enough to satisfy my curiosity. The acting was great as usual with plenty of new characters getting a chance to flex their muscles and of course Jack barking his way through the day as usual. I liked the dialogue... Read more
